Saskatchewan Apprenticeship
The Bricklayer Apprenticeship Program in Saskatchewan is administered by the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission. It is a 3 year program including 1500 hours of on-the-job training each year as well as 3 periods of technical training.
Potential apprentices need an employer to supervise and provide their on-the-job training. Trade entrance requirements no longer include a high school diploma, however like most employers we prefer to hire workers who have completed Grade 12. Individuals who have not graduated from high school should contact the Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission at 1-877-363-0536 for an assessment of their qualifications.
There are 3 periods of technical training spread over 3 years, and each period is 8 weeks in length. Training is delivered at SIAST Kelsey Campus in Saskatoon. Each level requires the successful completion of the technical training and 1500 hours of on-the-job experience.
Saskatchewan Scholarships and Grants
Apprenticeship Grants
The Government of Canada provides Apprenticeship grants up to $4,000 to apprentices registered in designated Red Seal trades. Bricklaying is a Red Seal trade.
The Apprenticeship Incentive Grant is available to registered apprentices once they have completed their first and/or second year of training.
The Apprenticeship Completion Grant is available to registered apprentices who have completed their apprenticeship program and have received their journeyperson certification.
Tax Cuts
The Government of Canada offers the Tradesperson's Tools Deduction that allows employed tradepeople to deduct the cost of eligible tools from their income. Eligible tools include those purchased for use in your job as a tradeperson and that your employer certified as being necessary for you to provide and use in your job.
Tuition Rebate
The Saskatchewan Government offers the Graduate Retention Program (GRP) that provides a tax rebate of up to $20,000 to eligible graduates.
Saskatchewan Youth Apprenticeship (SYA)
If you’re in high school, the Saskatchewan Youth Apprenticeship (SYA) program can help you gain valuable experience in a trade and give you the opportunity to expand on that training after graduation.
The SYA helps to raise awareness of apprenticeship in Saskatchewan by allowing young people to discover the rewards that come with working in a skilled trade. High school students who complete all 3 levels of the SYA and register as an apprentice in a designated trade receive the following benefits when applying for the apprenticeship program:
- waiver of registration fee (currently $150)
- waiver of first level of technical training tuition
- 300 hours of trade time credit
The SYA Program may also be available to individuals not in high school, although the financial waivers are not available if they continue on to the apprenticeship program.
Summer Youth Internship Program
The Summer Youth Internship Program is a summer employment program for high school students. Scorpio Masonry SK Ltd has been involved with this program for five years and often hires the students full time once they have completed high school. Saskatoon Trades and Skills Centre
They offer an 8 week masonry course that includes the following:
- Workplace Safety
- Orientation to concrete block construction
- Mixing, handling and application of mortar
- Proper use of tools
- Measuring, determining level and plumb
- Safe use of masonry saw
- Certification in CSTS and WHMIS
- Safe and efficient setup of scaffolding
- Certification in “Aerial Work Platform”
- Certification in “Fall Protection”
- Certification in “Forklift Training”
There are no registration or program fees, educational requirements, or qualifications to apply and applicants will receive wages for six hours a day while taking a course.
